Choosing and Using Sunscreen Effectively
Sunscreen is an essential part of any sun protection routine, but it works best when chosen and applied correctly.
Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 for everyday use, or SPF 50 for extended outdoor activity. Broad-spectrum protection means the product guards against both UVA rays, which contribute to skin ageing and long-term damage, and UVB rays, which cause sunburn. Most adults significantly under-apply sunscreen, which means the protection they receive is far less than the SPF rating suggests. Apply it generously at least 20 minutes before sun exposure, and reapply every two hours or after swimming, sweating, or towel drying. Do not forget commonly missed areas like the ears, the back of the neck, and the tops of your feet.
Sunscreen works best as one layer of protection within a broader approach that includes protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and seeking shade during peak UV hours, which are generally between 10am and 4pm.
Vitamin D and Balanced Sun Exposure
Sun safety does not mean avoiding the sun entirely. Sunlight is an important stimulus for vitamin D production in the body, and vitamin D plays a key role in bone health, immune function, and mood regulation. After the lower sunlight levels of winter, many people find their vitamin D levels have dropped and benefit from some gentle, sensible sun exposure in spring.
For most people, a few minutes of incidental sun exposure on the arms or legs during morning or late afternoon hours, when UV levels are lower, is sufficient to support vitamin D production without significant risk of damage. If you are concerned about your vitamin D levels, a supplement is a safe and reliable way to maintain adequate levels year-round without relying on UV exposure. Speak with your pharmacist about whether a vitamin D supplement might be right for you.
